Review Policy
At The Mystery Cartridge, we believe that every mystery deserves a fair investigation.
Whether we're uncovering a decades-old family secret, solving a murder aboard a luxury train, wandering through an abandoned hotel, or delivering mail in a quiet lakeside town, our goal is always the same:
To help readers discover memorable experiences while being honest about what worked, and what didn't.
Who We Are
The Mystery Cartridge is run by Bradley and Amanda.
Most of our games are experienced together. One of us is usually holding the controller, but every review reflects conversations, theories, observations, and discussions we had throughout the experience.
We don't review games separately and average our opinions.
We review the experience we shared.
That perspective is at the heart of everything we publish.
What We Review
Our primary focus includes:
Detective games
Murder mysteries
Narrative adventures
Psychological thrillers
Horror with strong investigative elements
Visual novels
Interactive fiction
Cozy story-driven games ("Palette Cleansers")
Occasionally we'll also review tabletop mystery games, detective experiences, or other mystery-related media that we think our readers will enjoy.
If it tells a compelling mystery, we're interested.
How We Review
We don't believe every game needs to be judged by graphics, frame rates, or multiplayer balance.
Instead, we ask questions like:
Did the story keep us invested?
Was the mystery satisfying?
Were the characters memorable?
Did we keep talking about it after we stopped playing?
Was it enjoyable as a shared experience?
Would we recommend spending your time, and your money, on it?
Every review reflects those priorities.
Our Verdicts
Rather than assigning a numerical score, every review concludes with one of four verdicts.
🔎 Case Closed — Essential Play
An outstanding experience that we enthusiastically recommend.
These are the games we expect to keep talking about long after the credits roll.
🗂 Open the File — Recommended
A strong recommendation with only minor reservations.
Well worth your time if the genre appeals to you.
📁 Wait for More Evidence
A game with genuine strengths that is currently held back by technical issues, performance concerns, or other significant problems.
This verdict may change if those issues are addressed.
❌ Case Dismissed
A game we cannot recommend in its current state.
Our Review Features
Many of our reviews include recurring features designed to help readers make informed decisions.
❤️ Couple Experience
Some games are wonderful to experience with another person, even if only one of you is holding the controller.
We'll tell you when a game shines as a shared experience.
🛋 Palette Cleanser
Not every game has to be emotionally exhausting.
After a particularly heavy mystery or horror title, we sometimes recommend cozy, relaxing games that let you catch your breath before diving into the next investigation.
🕴️ Amanda's Mannequin Warning™
This one started as an inside joke.
It turns out Amanda really, really doesn't like creepy mannequins.
After unexpectedly encountering unsettling mannequin sequences in multiple games, we decided to start warning readers whenever they appear.
It may make some people laugh.
It may genuinely help others.
Either way, the warning stays.
🎮 Demo Available?
Whenever a game offers a playable demo, we'll let you know.
We love when players can try a game before deciding whether to purchase it.
🔎 Case Reopened
Games change.
Developers release patches.
Performance improves.
New content is added.
When meaningful updates significantly affect our original review, we'll revisit the game and publish an updated verdict.
Review Copies
Most of the games we review are purchased with our own money.
If a developer or publisher provides us with a review copy, that fact will always be clearly disclosed within the review.
Receiving a review copy does not guarantee coverage.
It does not guarantee a positive review.
It does not influence our conclusions.
Our responsibility is to ourselves and our readers.
Contacting Developers
We aren't afraid to contact developers.
Sometimes that's to report a bug.
Sometimes it's to ask a question.
Sometimes it's to offer constructive feedback that we believe could improve the experience for future players.
Likewise, if we encounter a significant issue and a developer later resolves it, we're happy to revisit the game and update our review.
Great games deserve recognition when they improve.
Spoiler Policy
Mysteries depend on discovery.
Because of that, we take spoilers seriously.
Unless a review is clearly labeled otherwise, our reviews are written to help you decide whether to play a game, not to reveal its biggest surprises.
Major plot twists, endings, and solutions will remain unspoiled.
If we discuss spoiler content, we'll provide a clear warning first.
Independence
Our opinions are our own.
We don't sell review scores.
We don't promise favorable coverage.
We don't believe every game needs to be loved, or hated.
Our goal isn't to chase controversy or clickbait.
It's to help fellow mystery fans discover experiences worth investigating.
Our Promise
Whether we've purchased the game ourselves or received a review copy, every title receives the same treatment:
We'll play it.
We'll discuss it.
We'll think about it.
Then we'll tell you, honestly, whether we believe it's worth your time.
Because every mystery deserves a fair investigation.
Thank you for trusting The Mystery Cartridge.
We'll see you at the next case.
